Postpartum Depression
New mothers sometimes suffer from an extended, intense form of depression called Postpartum Depression (PPD). This may include episodes crying and mood swings or feelings of sadness.
Anxiety
Postpartum anxiety is the constant worrying that interferes with the ability to calm down. This is associated with irrational fears and constantly feeling on edge. These worries may be tied to the mother and/or for the baby.
Psychosis
Postpartum psychosis is associated with hallucinations and delusions after birth. Though rare, if not caught early, it could have fatal effects on the mother later on. Symptoms are categorized into manic, depressive, and atypical.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Often mistaken or looped under postpartum anxiety, postpartum ocd exasperates certain anxiety symptoms. These include a focused obsession with protecting the baby and often seeking reassurance with care and from her partner.
